Microsoft China rips off Asia’s No. 1 Microblogging Service
Dec 15th
hey people. im back. but this time, with a bad news.
look at the title. it says it all. but the weird thing is, its Microsoft doing it. (not forgetting it arises from china.)
Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but blatant theft of code, design, and UI elements is just not cool, especially when the infringing party is the biggest software company in the world. Yes, we’re talking about Microsoft. Blerg.
Here’s the short of what we think has happened:
- Microsoft China officially launched its own microblogging service, MSN Juku/Hompy/Mclub, some time in November, 2009.
- The service’s design and UI is by and large an EXACT copy of Plurk’s innovative left-right timeline scrolling navigation system. (see screen captures below)
- Some 80% of the client and product codebase appears to be stolen directly from Plurk! (see evidence below).
- Plurk was never approached nor collaborated in any capacity with MS on this service.
- As a young startup, we’re stunned, shocked, and unsure what to do next and need your support and suggestions.
We were first tipped off by high profile bloggers and Taiwanese users of our community that Microsoft had just launched a new Chinese microblogging service that looked eerily similar to Plurk. Needless to say we were absolutely shocked and outraged when we first saw with our own eyes the cosmetic similarities Microsoft’s new offering had with Plurk. From the filter tabs, emoticons, qualifier/verb placement, Karma scoring system, media support, new user walkthroughs to pretty much everything else that gives Plurk its trademark appeal, Microsoft China’s offering ripped off our service. See for yourself: (Microsoft MClub on top, Plurk on bottom).

A little overly inspired, wouldn’t you agree? Of course, we understand others will always be motivated to emulate and take bits and pieces of visual and functional elements from widely successful services and carve out localized versions. Plurk was already Taiwan’s biggest microblogging service, 10x bigger than Twitter in that market alone, and emerging as Asia’s answer to Twitter in many of the biggest countries in East Asian, so naturally Microsoft probably saw some potential in piggybacking off the success of our unique service and launching something similar in a related market like China. Ultimately if something works, others will copy it and try to adapt it to another market, be it another vertical or another locale. It’s the nature of the web. And for the most part, we don’t get bothered by clones. Of course, there will always be exceptional circumstances where we feel wholly wronged, both legally and more important, morally, and this one just happens to be one of those rare cases. That it is Microsoft doing the copying in broad daylight makes it even more incredulous.
Let me explain. If this was just a case of visual inspiration gone too far, we could probably have lived with it. We would have taken the time to reach out to Microsoft, get colour on the matter and try to amicably resolve it. That’s not the case here. This is something far more sinister. On closer inspection, we found that MUCH of the codebase and data structures that Microsoft’s MClub uses are identical snapshots of our code. Microsoft has taken Plurk’s custom developed libraries, css files and client code and just ported them directly over to their service without any attempt to even mask this! Here are just 3 small examples of literally hundreds we have found. Any developer will be able to see that this is basically copied and stolen code.

Some users in the blogosphere even speculated that Microsoft Mclub/Juku was some sort of official partnership we’d struck with Microsoft to clear a re-entry into China after our earlier censorship in the region behind the Great Firewall of China, prior to which we were the #1 microblogging service in the country. Let’s clear the air around this. While many reputable internet companies have forged solid partnerships with Plurk, valuing our innovation and market leadership in Asia, Microsoft was absolutely not one of them. We were never contacted by any party at M$ to collaborate on such a venture nor did we give any prior written or verbal permission to anyone on their side to take our code, take our CSS, and copy the essence and ethos of our service.
We’re still in shock asking why Microsoft would even stoop to this level of wilfully plagiarising a young and innovative upstart’s work rather than reach out to us or innovate on their own terms. Of course, it just hits that much closer to home when all your years of hard work and effort to create something unique are stolen so brazenly. All the more ironic considering Microsoft has often been leading the charge on fighting for stronger IP laws and combating software piracy in China.
So what next? We’re not entirely sure but we are exploring our options. We have been seeking advice from respected colleagues, responding to press inquiries and gathering facts on the timeline of events and parties involved here to understand why and how this took place.
To our millions of loyal users: We also need your sincere help. We need your loud and emphatic voices. We need you to help us get out this important story to anyone and everyone you know who can raise awareness on what has taken place. Please translate this story into your respective languages, share it with local media, bloggers and friends, and help us fight the good fight for your beloved Plurk.

Now, more than twelve hours later, Microsoft still has no real response to the situation. It was the middle of the night in China when the story broke, and Microsoft says that they are just now working with their team there to “track down the information.” In the meantime, Juku is being taken down:
Earlier today, questions arose over a feature developed by a third-party vendor for our MSN China joint venture. We are working with our MSN China joint venture to investigate the situation.
Unfortunately, when these questions first arose, it was the middle of the night in China. Now that the day has begun in China, our teams are working hard to track down the information.
Here’s what we know at this point. Our MSN China joint venture contracted with an independent vendor to create a feature called MSN Juku that allowed MSN users to find friends via microblogging and online games. This MSN Juku feature was made available to MSN China users in November and is still in beta.
Because questions have been raised about the code base comprising the service, MSN China will be suspending access to the Juku beta feature temporarily while we investigate the matter fully.
We will provide additional information as we learn more.
Only two things are really clear right now. First, Microsoft is standing around with their pants around their ankles looking pretty ridiculous right now. And second, this is the best thing to happen to Plurk, ever.
Microsoft China steals Plurk site code and design. Please spread this story and help us fight this

want to know more about the latest IT happenings in Singapore? check this out..
we all commonly know about the free Wireless@SG service, but it will be free till december 2009, but however, iDA extended it! yay! that should be good news to all free Wireless@SG users and also for those who does not have internet access at home.
which its till 2013.
that would also save me money in getting the vodaphone M1 wireless or the Starhub Maxmobile wireless. hahah.
thats great.
next up, wanting to experience optic fibre high speed network up to 1Gbps? yeah. thats the Singapore’s Next Generation National Broadband Network (NGNBN).
This fibre optic platform will be the key foundation of the NGNBN, which is part of the Intelligent Nation 2015 or iN2015 blueprint to turn Singapore into a sophisticated city with seamless connectivity. OpenNet will deliver a resilient and robust fibre platform at least two and a half years ahead of schedule of the iN2015 vision, positioning for completion by 2012.
Being the foundation of the NGNBN, OpenNet will provide a competitive, yet neutral environment for all downstream operators, enabling the delivery of ultra-high speeds network of 1Gbps and above.
thats about it. OpenNet got the bid, which is a joint venture of four partners – Axia NetMedia (Axia), Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel), Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and SP Telecommunications (SPT).
That means, it would be expensive subscription again.
and i prefer starhub, as it would be alot cheaper, and yeap.

circle line was down for 10 mins
SERVICE on the Circle Line was disrupted for about 10 minutes on Thurday on its first day of operations.
The Straits Times understands that the power went out after lunchtime, and a train with passengers on board was stuck in the tunnel. It was moved to Bishan MRT and passengers were evacuated within four minutes.
Service on both sides of the line was down for about 10 minutes before it resumed.
Trains started rolling through the line’s first five stations – Marymount, Bishan, Lorong Chuan, Serangoon and Bartley – on Thursday morning, with the first train arriving at 6 am.

this is like super dangerous. we seem to be too complacent, and ignore all kinds of danger, i think after this, i would really maintain even higher standards of personal hygiene.

Imagine of causeway point on fire….
May 22nd
this incident was held at about 5:34PM when i was coming back from SP, and yes i was super duper tired after lectures and also had to stay back as i needed one report format for my marketing project.
then i overslept on the train and went to admiralty, and so i took the return train back to woodlands. after alighting at woodlands, was wanting to meet jieying. so yeah. she was like in the toilet, and the fire alarm rang…
i was reacted normal, since it might just be a small incident as normally you do hear false alarms in school, shopping centres, even commercial buildings. and yeah. was waiting outside long john silvers.
then yeah. saw xinli with her, and yeah. so we walked out of causeway point, and at the same time, we heard over the public announcement saying that “We are accessing situation, and ask the people in the mall to stay calm and do not use the lift till further notice.” so i treated it as a false alarm. so jieying wanted to come my house to do RJ and spend some time.
at about 5:40PM so yeah. xinli wanted to top up her ezlink card, and thereafter, we saw smoke coming out from the mall, and one aunty beside us was saying that the alarm sounded the third time. i was like thinking …. hmm… the management accessing the situation, then smoke coming out from the building at level 4~5 at the carpark area, and they can treat it as a “calm situation”? omg. and yeah. we carried on to see whats happening, so we went around, and still see people walking in and out of causeway point, as if nothing has happened.
thereafter, about 5 mins after we walked to the other side of the building, near metro area, we got the feel of the bruning smell, it seems to be some machines being burnt? so thereafter, the fire-engines from the civil defence came. was so cool. lol. haha. but it seems that they are really slow in respose, all at their own pace. so then after, the management, seems to do something, by asking the metro staffs to evacuate out of the building. so after that, we got kind of bored, and walked into causeway point, to see whats really going on. since there was no sign of smoke after awhile. so we went in to causeway, and i rang simply.shamus.
hahaha. so yeah. that was like 6:05PM, people still in the mall. LOL! then was like. cool ah. see people rushing down, but seems that there was no fire? and yeah. the side where popular, timezone.
heard it was from raffles dental clinic, and some blogs can even say that was from level 2~3, but to me, confirmed! level 4~5, since that was the place on fire. look at the photos:
then we walked over to the metro and courts area, only seeing that these few areas, the “fire safety measures of the building was then put in place. the evacuation of the whole mall only take place at about 6:10PM and yeah. at then was like i saw the police talking to 2 guys, seems like the police was holding some “fire hazardous stuffs” not sure if they were culprits or assisting in investigations.
people was like asking the security guards and management about the fire, but however, the security guards are so rude and answered a probably curious man “This is a real fire. How many times you want me to tell you.” This was what the security guard replied. I seriously find it disturbing, since they should at least answer the questions from the public. Another security guard answered another lady, “…. This is so much I can tell you, I won’t answer anything more.”
after that i headed back home, and yeah on the way back, passing by civic centre, seems that lots of people queuing up for lerk thai, macdonalds, and also the cafe in the library, seems that food really does matter to us! haha. lol.
thats about it.

The Sony Ericsson Free Laptop Hoax/Scam
May 16th
Hi everyone,
I’m back blogging, but however, this time, i got an interesting piece of article to share, since i just gotten a email hoax that is being forwarded to me.
This was the email:
Then i was wondering, when did ERICSSON started producing laptops? omg. and SONY bought over ERICSSON long time ago, so after which, started google-ling, and found out these articles.
http://uptech-it.com/mobile-phone-news/ericsson-t18-laptop-scam.html
http://www.scamtypes.com/the-sony-ericsson-free-laptop-hoax.html
This press release from ERICSSON will confirm that, this is totally bullshit and its a hoax/scam to trick gullible people: Heres the official word from Ericsson : http://www.ericsson.com/ca/hoax.shtml
1. I couldn’t believe how gullible people are. In these day and age, who would give away anything for free.
2. Sony Ericsson only manufactures mobile phones.
3. Ericsson T18 and Ericsson R320 are older models that have now been discontinued, which are mobile phones and not laptops.
ERICSSON T18
ERICSSON R320
3. Chain letters are a technique used by spammers to gather email addresses. Every time you forward this email to your friends, your email address and theirs is getting added to the main text of this email that will eventually get in the hands of hundreds of people you don’t even know. Eventually, you’ll receive more spam emails just like the Ericsson T18 laptop scam.
Before getting your hopes up and before forwarding this kind of junk, it’s so easy to find out the truth by simply searching on search engines. It only takes 30 seconds. Please just use your friendly piece of tool, called the google search engine.
