UPDATE: it was just a bug!

Want to know what happened to the MSN white box under DP? Here’s to the official response from MSN.

UPDATE: The Messenger team speaks: “it was only a bug.

A weird white box or Office logo.

Hey Messenger users, Aaron here. We are seeing an issue where Messenger versions 8.1 and 8.5 are experiencing a technical issue that is causing a blank white box to appear in the conversation window. If you are the 9.0 beta you might be seeing an Office Logo. Believe it or not this is the same bug. The issue does not impact your ability to send and receive messages. We apologize for the inconvenience and are working hard behind the scenes to lose the box and the logo. Hang tight, it should be back to normal before you know it!

LOL! that was the quote from Messenger Team Blog. and its now being resolved.

Did you notice this weird white square box which sits under some of your friend’s display picture?

(credits: mess.be & uploaded to this blog)

You might have realised these:
- It’s not present in all conversation windows, just with certain contacts. not all.
- It appears in Windows Live Messenger 8.5 and 8.1.
- UPDATE: In Windows Live Messenger 9.0 Beta, it’s not a box but the Office icon (screenshot).

It doesn’t do anything when clicked, there are no options, and it just sits there next to the webcam and option buttons.

At first, i thought it was a bug of MSN Plus! or StuffPlug that i have installed on MSN, but after goggling and looking into some sites, i got theses few conclusions, that is not a bug of the 2 plugins install.

So, what could it be? A new feature? A secondary DP? Is it a new advertising space? A webcam preview? A status icon or display picture? Is it just a bug?

Let’s just wait and see how Microsoft/MSN explains this. :D

What If Gmail Had Been Designed by Microsoft?

Filed Under ([[home]] :D, [[play :D, [[techie stuff :D, work++ ]] :D) by Titanium on 27-12-2007

Original Source: http://blogoscoped.com/archive/2007-11-20-n35.html

Today I want to ponder the question: what if Microsoft, not Google, had created Gmail? What would be the differences in that web mail client for users today? What if we apply some of the same design rules that brought us Hotmail, for instance?

To start, here’s the current Gmail homepage after you log-in:

First of all, we need to rebrand the application name to something longer. Let’s call this Windows Live Gmail, and add some of the visual elements connected with Windows. Also, as in Hotmail, there needs to be less space for the email subjects to make place for a reading pane, which is full of verbose explanatory help text*:

*Not shown in the screenshot, we’ll also throw in a security measurement that will prevent you from clicking on links in emails, unless you discovered the switch to mark a mail as safe. Another security measurement we’ll add is that you won’t be able to log-in with just username anymore but are required to enter the full username@gmail.com. Furthermore, we will change the browser URL from http://gmail.microsoft.com to the more professional looking http://by114w.bay114.gmail.live.com/mail/mail.aspx?rru=home.

For another design iteration in our inbox, we will need to camouflage the checkboxes next to the messages by putting a mail icon on top of them. Also, we need to break up messages from conversation threads into their individual parts. Furthermore, this version of Gmail needs to change from context-aware text ads to context-unaware graphic banners, which we’ll require to carry at least one clip art. Gmail currently has a chat box which I don’t use and thus find annoying, so I think we can build on that and expand it to a more full-featured chat widget, replacing the labels box. We’ll also adjust the spam filter slightly to show a couple of more bulk mails in the inbox:

There’s still not enough banner space available though, so let’s add a top row for ads and move the rest a bit more down. Also, to go back to the real Microsoft spirit, the inbox will now carry a maximum of 2 MB of messages – that was the amount Hotmail offered when Gmail was released with 1 GB in April 2004. Also, Microsoft-style, the actual start page of this service will not be the inbox, but a “welcome” splash screen. Please imagine the ads blinking at this point:

Somehow, this still misses part of the Microsoft feeling – the current design is just too bright & light, and it doesn’t have enough glamor. I’ll darken the colors a bit and add some smooth shades. Also, admittedly, Hotmail is a bit slower than Google’s competing service, so we’ll add some “loading” messages. Usually there’s less focus on unclutteredness with the Redmond guys, so we’ll add some MSN news bits and “special offers” where space is left. Plus, to increase user lock-in, let’s get rid of the “sign out” link. I’m also putting less emphasis on search, moving the box to the bottom right and replacing it with a dog:

Voila, we’re done… that was easy! Your potential, their passion. Coming up tomorrow: “What if Microsoft had designed Windows Vista.” Stay tuned!

back to school to help out!

Filed Under ([[home]] :D, [[play :D, [[techie stuff :D, study# ]] :D, work++ ]] :D) by Titanium on 21-12-2007

i went back to school today and help out, and mr lee was saying that he will sponsor me lunch, and also since wei han needs help so yeah, i came back, today was also the sec 1 registration, some chio, some so-so, some … dun want to say le.  so i went to school today with a NON-PING CHANG DE XIN, as it thought i will be late, but in the end, not. i was too early, so sat outside the ta room and surf the CCSS_WLAN. lol. and yeah. was surfing real well. :)

then, wei han came. i went into the lab and started slacking first, and also to do some of the stuff.

what i should do is:

-  empty the box

- cut the box back

- cut the box side-of the back

- cut the other box side-of the back

- fold the box by flattening it

- stack it up.

so i was doing until 12:30 and yeah. lunchie time. :) went out with mr lee, wei han went to meet his friend.  and yeah. mr lee was talking to me about many stuff, mostly private and confidential stuff. and yeah. no way i will tell. then he was saying, “what dessert you want?” and i looked at him, then he say. “i treat full meal one hor. got noodles, meat, veggie, soup and still got dessert some more, dun drink soft/gassy drinks, bad for health.” so i was saying. “ke dou chin chow” the he said “huh?”. i say, its nice, and yeah. he went to order and i was still eating the noodles when he ate finish his, i was slow. i know. then he came back with the “ke dou chin chow” and yeah. i was eating half way and he said, “ya hor, really like ke dou leh.” i said “ya lor” then yeah.

we went back to school and he went back to HOD room and i went back to ta room and guess what, wei han not around! so i went to get the keys from uncle krishnan. and yeah. opened the door and started doing my stuff first. and after about 30 - 40 mins, i heard key ringing sound. then seems like the person tested 2 keys and started knocking hard after that, seems like is not wei han as he will try to knock the door after a try. then i opened the door and saw mr lee. he was walking in with 2 books and was looking for wei han. he rushed into the main ta room and leaped to lab 2 and see no one. so he asked “where is wei han?” i said “he still eating and he said that he coming back. so he didnt say anything and started explaining to me regarding the 2 books.  so i listened and also asked, “i heard that the school say that they loaning laptops to student to use.” then he replied “ya. so then the student will sign out and write the purpose lor, example project use.” then i say “ai ya. they will of course say project la. but always fake one and also how they push the trolley up?” then he say “ya lor thats the only problem now. i will think of that, and ya. 4/1 will use first, and ya, go do your thing, quick.” then i say “good! good! okay.”  yeah. thats the end.

and wei han came back with his friend. and yeah we were then enjoying life after that and we start talking about computer optimization stuff. lol. then we started talking. and yeah too many till i cannot write finish.  so lets stop here.

and yeah. i was doing 40 cpu size and 40 monitor size boxes. total 80. took me quite a long time, and in the process i also bleeded.

i came back home and yeah. my dad was asking us to go cwp and eat jack’s place. then we went over there and eat. :P very nice and we also ordered lobster soup. :) so yeah thats about it. :)

Microsoft puts the kibosh on 2009 Vienna rumors

Filed Under ([[techie stuff :D) by Titanium on 15-02-2007

Aw c’mon Microsoft, why you always gotta ruin our fun? We were perfectly content to push around vague rumors of a Windows Vista followup in late 2009 and whatever features it may or may not have, dangling all our hopes and dreams off of a thin and potentially out-of-context quote from Ben Fathi, and now you’ve gotta come along and disown the guy. According to Kevin Kutz, Director of Windows Client: “The launch of Windows Vista was an incredibly exciting moment for our customers and partners around the world, and the company is focused on the value Windows Vista will bring to people today. We are not giving official guidance to the public yet about the next version of Windows, other than that we’re working on it. When we are ready, we will provide updates.” Ars Technica conjectures that the original story might’ve even gotten Ben wrong, and the 2.5 years might be how long it takes for for Vienna to make it out the door after the Fiji service pack. Of course, the word from Mr. Fathi was evidently not “official guidance,” so who knows. What we can be certain of is that there are two mistakes Microsoft doesn’t want to repeat with this OS: taking forever to release, and drumming up false hopes of any sort of launch date earlier than the actual one.

[Thanks, Mike]

Elecom busts out bicycle-style locks for iPods

Filed Under ([[techie stuff :D) by Titanium on 13-02-2007

You can add Japan’s prolific Elecom to the growing number of companies providing varying levels of protection for the countless theft-attracting iPods being toted about, with the company bringing some familiar security measures to bear on the problem. Available for both 5G iPods and 1st and 2nd gen iPod nanos, and in your choice of black or white, the locks will add a bit of heft to your otherwise portable device but should keep any would-be thieves from running off with it, not to mention yourself when you forget the combination. Those of you with better memories than us, however, can sang either model now for 5,040 Yen, or just over forty bucks.
